According to its latest findings, a nationwide animal shelter society ranked South Carolina No. 16 in pet shelter deaths.

Officials say that in 2020 South Carolina had an animal save rate of 80.95 percent, saving 90,233 animals to 10,911 killed. Compared to the previous year, South Carolina reduced its death rate by 37.7 percent.

Currently, 27 percent of South Carolina shelters are no-kill shelters. In order for a shelter to maintain that distinction, they must have a save rate above 90 percent.
